Depiction of embossing and debossing

Embossing and Debossing

Embossing and debossing are processes in which a set of dies are used to deform the paper to confirm to a specific image. Like letterpress, the image is either pushed down into the paper (debossing) or raised up above the surface of the paper (embossing).

Both embossing and debossing are suitable for larger, bolder images such as titles, headings or logos. Like foil stamping, heat is used to help the paper set into the shape defined by the copper die.

If a stock is thick enough - think VERY thick, a process of cold debossing is also available. This process avoids the considerable cost of copper dies by using the same dies as letterpress printing.
